chapter 21

As I suspected, a lovely smelling bath worked wonders for my irritation but it did not stop my thoughts. I realized that Rett should have been back any day. What would happen if he noticed that Merrick was not teaching me what he was supposed to be teaching me? I would like to think I could lie and cover for a few days but eventually, he would notice, and then what? If he was trying to win me over romantically then he would be at the least irritated with Merrick for making moves in his absence.

I finished toweling off and walked over to my wardrobe. I pulled out a long silk nightgown and matching silk slippers, put my hair in a braid to dry, and then left my room heading towards Merrick’s. I knew Callan told me to let him handle it but, maybe, if I had a face-to-face conversation with him and he saw I was not being weird about things then he wouldn’t be either. Thoughts of him running his hands over my skin fluttered through my mind as I walked closer to his room, which caused chill bumps to rise on my arms. I swore I could smell him. I forced myself to think about other things.

Were two swords better than one? Did blue eggs come from bluebirds? How much cheese was actually in a cheesecake? Were elephants really afraid of…...wait a minute, what is Jacoby doing?

I slowed my walking and stopped the distraction questions as I noticed Jacoby in front of Merrick’s door. Normally these two were not together, but maybe he was there to tell Merrick that Rett would be home soon. Then again, Jacoby was rarely far from Rett so maybe he was already here.

Damnit.

“Hey, Jacoby!” I smiled broadly at him, catching him by surprise. He returned a tight-lipped smile and a small nod of his head.

“Hello, Clara.”

“What are you doing?” My eyes moved between him and the door to Merrick’s room questioningly.

“You know, it’s the strangest thing. I completely forgot why I came down here and was trying to remember before I knocked. Must be my old age, not handling the long traveling the way I used to when I was younger.” A grin crept across his face. “800 years wears on you after a while.”

If he had meant that as a way to shock me, he succeeded. “Have you been with Rett the majority of that time?” Perhaps that would give me a better idea of what I had to deal with.

“No. I was around five hundred years old when his mother entrusted me with His Highness’s protection. Sadly, she sought none of her own and was killed for it, but I have stayed with him since.”

“So then, is Rett here?” I tried my best to keep my voice level.

“He is.” A stern look crossed Jacoby’s face as he stared at me. I could have sworn for a split second I saw him sneer at me, but it was so fast that I could had just as easily imagined it.
